Within each size, the type is two varieties: smooth (also referred to as smooth coat) and wire (also referred to as wire coat, wirehaired, longhaired or rough coat). There are three sizes of Podengos: Podengo Pequeno, Podengo Medio and Podengo Grande. (Pequeno: rabbits Medio: rabbits and wild boar Grande: deer and wild boar). Each size category traditionally hunts game appropriate to their size and temperament. When game is found, they kill and retrieve it, or flush it towards the hunter to be shot. ![]() Typically, the dogs hunt in a pack with their handler following. Keen hunting dogs, the Podengo has an affinity for game regardless of size. Loyal and fearless, Podengos are also good house guards and are amenable to training by dog experienced people and those that enjoy primitive (unrefined, “less domesticated”) dog behavior. ![]() In general, the breed is healthy the Pequeno (small) variety has an average lifespan of approximately 15–17 years.Īll Podengo types are hardy, intelligent and lively dogs, excelling at agility and making fine companions. ![]() The smooth coated variety is traditional, whereas the wire coated variety is an outcome of the assimilation of various other breeds during the 20th century. Their coats are either short and ‘smooth’, or longer and ‘wired’. As a breed, the Podengo is divided into three size categories that are not interbred: small (Pequeno), medium (Médio) and large (Grande). He would probably do better with at least one other canine companion in the house & will need a fenced yard to release some energy but if you take a few good walks a day, he would be fine without a yard. The Portuguese Podengo is hound (sight and scent) breed from Portugal. Bobby is a Portuguese Podengo, is good with other dogs, & is quite active so an energetic family who likes to walk or hike would be fabulous for him. And thanks to Bring Portuguese Podengos to Light for always being there for them & for alerting us to the ones in the most need or in the most danger at the various pounds. One dog seems like a drop in an ocean but what we DO know is that it makes a difference for that one dog, in this case our adorable little Bobby. The dogs of Portugal are so overlooked & have very little in the way of assistance. As I’ve said before, the people in Portugal don’t like the wire-haired dogs & adoption there is usually quite difficult, if impossible, for these dogs. If you think you have a spot in your home & heart for this guy, please send us a message! We vow that he'll be invisible no more! He's currently being fostered in MI but can travel for the right family.īobby Brown is quite a clown! At only 3 years old & 18 lbs, he still has many years ahead of him & we want them to NOT be surrounded by shelter walls. He'll benefit from a quiet home & will need at least one other canine companion to follow. Initially he's very shy of strangers but will warm up with proper time given by his family. There's just no substitute for living in a home so that's why we plan to bring him to the US within the next few months to find a forever family of his very own. Sadly Booz has been at Casa de Postas for the past 5 years! I can just imagine how many other dogs he's seen come in and then move on, all while he remains behind. He still has a droopy bottom lip due to nerve damage. It took 2 weeks to finally capture him & the amazing folks at Casa de Postas took him in & fixed his injuries. Booz survived on the streets of Seville in Spain until being hit by a car & injuring his jaw & leg. ![]() No, Booz is NOT a sighthound but you'll soon realize why I want to help him. Booz is a 6 yr old Breton mix, what we know in the US as a Brittany Spaniel.
